Applications should be invited

A clear Job Description and terms of employment/payable allowances should be provided

Process, however informal, should be clear

Interviews will be held in the next three weeks and it is hoped that an appointment will be announced by the end of May

If the duration of the appointment is fixed, that, too, should be public knowledge (“Heads of Department are appointed for three years, after which the post will be re-advertised.”) Making appointments of fixed duration is a good way of ensuring fresh faces in the team, and giving a wider pool of staff opportunity to exercise leadership. A staff member who has been carrying a title for years, but has long since ceased to be a leader is a deadly and demoralizing influence in the school.
